The first of two rapid fire gun batteries to be built just outside Fort Morgan, Thomas began service just as the Spanish-American War broke out. Thomas mounted two 4.7” Rapid Fire guns, each of them capable of firing a 45 pound projectile six miles, Thomas proved to be extremely vulnerable to enemy fire.
