One of Fort Morgan’s cisterns. When forced to surrender the fort to Admiral Farragut’s combined sea and land forces, Morgan’s commander ordered his men to empty the fort’s powder magazines and dump their contents into the cisterns, thereby poisoning the water therein and denying it to the Federal occupiers, and destroying the fort’s supplies of black powder in the process.
